Mike goes Solo

Our first student to go Solo, 73-year old Mike Atter, proves that it is never too late to go flying and earn your pilot's licence. Here our Chief Flying Instructor Brad Isaacson congratulates Mike on his achievement after he took to the Durban Skyye by himself after the initial phase of pilot training.

Congratulations to both Mike and Brad on this milestone event. Many happy and safe flying hours by yourself Mike. Well deserved achievement.

Instructor Brad does a few circuits with Mike before getting out of the plane and letting Mike fly by himself. Thanks Brian for being on hand to take these wonderful photos

"Best thing I have ever done"

It was a blustery Saturday morning, but our Chief Flying Instructor Brad is master of the winds and Ulf, who enjoyed a flight along the Durban and Umhlanga beachfront in our Flight School microlight, said "Oh my word, this is the best thing I have ever done."

You too can have some fun in the Durban Skyye - Intro flights are R600 for 20 mins taking in the Durban beachfront, Stadium and harbour mouth, or a 30 mins flight that extends the thrill to the Umhlanga lighthouse as well for R850. Bookings 083-7033329 or online at the top of this website, or email me for a gift voucher if it's a birthday or special gift.. durbanskyye@gmail.com - and if it's a career you are looking for we do full pilot training to get your own microlight or fixed wing licence.. stepping stone to either recreational flying or becoming an airline pilot.

Mike shows us you can!

You're never too old or young to learn to fly and our student Mike Atter shows you can!! Mike used to fly but his licence lapsed and he is again taking up his passion for flying and is about ready to go solo. Big day coming Mike, well done!

Ready to go!!

Taildragger conversion training

Incredible day flying yesteday.. the air was clean and clear and you could see forever. Our Instructor Larry Van Der Merwe took to the skyye with me in our Taildragger MSC for my conversion training and we flew out to Cato Ridge and Pietermaritzburg for some cheaper circuits landing this beauty. You can do your conversion too at Durban Skyye Flight School - for both PPL and NPL pilots.

Larry with MSC in Pietermaritzburg - beautiful little airport and an ideal lunch stop if you are in the area - the coffee shop opens when the Link airline plane is due to arrive

All smiles from Larry as we head back to Durban

Durban's Bluff, the harbour and  city as we pass the compulsory reporting point at Cooper's Lighthouse

We head to the harbour entrance which is the second reporting point as we enter the Virginia Airport airspace

Rounding the harbour mouth we have now left uncontrolled airspace and the beautiful view back to the Bluff reveals itself. I used to be the City Councillor for the Fynnland ward and this view basically takes in my ward.. from the harbour side through the Fynnland suburb to Beacon Road.

Night flying and Sharks rugby

What an awesome night to do a night flight over Durban after the rains had cleared the sky. We saw night racing at Greyville Race Course and even got to see the Sharks beat the Lions from far above Kings Park rugby Stadium tonight. For my co-pilot Brandon, it was his first night flight and the views were spectacular.. the photos cannot do justice to it!

Navigation Rally

Congrats to Dave and his Student Tashvir on winning the Navigation Rally today in our Flight School Sling FYA. This involved a two hour flight from Virginia to various landmark waypoints on the map.

In the last pic they are working out the route headings and timing to be able to get to the landmark waypoints in the allotted times. A tracking device accompanies the plane so that a log of their flight can be checked. No turns more than 90 deg can be made so the pilots need to fly accurately to each point on the map without the use of the GPS.

Dave and his student with their winning certificates

Calculating compass headings, distances to fly and ground speed needed to get to the waypoints on time. This means the speed of the aircraft has to be adjusted in the air depending on whether there is a headwind or crosswind so as to reach each point as planned.

East Coast Radio day at Durban Skyye

We had a thrilling East Coast Radio day at the Flight School, with Cameron Claassens, Gabe Sithole, Michael Zuma and Mak Dlamini - the first time I have been 500 ft in the air, said one!

And it was a chance for our ECR team to see the east coast from above and taste the freedom of flight in our microlights... "the closest you will get to feel what it is to be a bird" said Brad our Chief Flying Instructor.

In the foreground our CFI Brad with Cameron Claassens of East Coast Radio

"And it's just this seat-belt holding me in?", asks Cameron

A thumbs up for his first flight above 500 ft from the ECR guys

A see a GoPro movie in the making as the ECR team take to the east coast skyye!!

Let's do this!!
The ECR boys enjoying the view from 500 ft along the beachfront. Our 20 min Intro Flight costs R600 and takes you from Virginia past the Durban Stadium and Golden Mile to the Harbour and back, and the R850 30 min flight adds the Umhlanga beachfront and Lighthouse to the trip - all thrills and even whale spotting! Book online on our website by clicking on the online bookings tab or phone 083-7033329.
