Brad and Dave launch new Flight School
Brad and Dave are reaching for the stars with their new Flight School - where the skyye's no limit.
Brad has over 1000 hours of instruction on microlight and light sport aircraft and is teaming up with Dave, a recently qualified pilot, to launch Durban Skyye Flight School to operate from Virginia Airport.
The application for approval from the civil aviation authorities is presently under way and the proposed 300+ pages comprehensive Training and Procedures manuals have been submitted for approval.

Airline Transport Pilot
Requirements for the issue of an ATPL:
1. Be at least 21 years old.
2. Pass the SA-CAA ATP theoretical examinations.
3. Have completed not less than 1500 hours of flight time. (You need to check the Regulations to determine what hours count in full and what hours are limited, as well as the break down of hours).
4. Successfully complete a practical flight test, conducted by a Designated Flight Examiner (DFE), on a multi engine turbine / jet aircraft or a multi engine aircraft with a maximum take off weight exceeding 5 700KG’s.
For this you will need preparation from an experienced multi-crew perspective. This normally entails refreshing the instrument principles that should be quite familiar at this stage, and producing a comprehensive theoretical scenario that covers all aspects of command preparation when conducting flight planning and execution.
You will need thorough briefing by your flight school on all aspects of the legal perspective of flight planning, flight and duty considerations, fuel planning, take off minima, take off alternates, en-route navigation, destination landing minima, destination alternate minima, all aspects of system abnormalities (applicable to type) and Crew Resource Management, incorporating Risk Management.

Commercial Pilot Licence
This is the rating you will require to enter the commercial and airline world of aviation. As a commercial pilot you may fly as pilot in command, for remuneration, any aircraft certified for single pilot operations.
Co-Pilot
You may operate as a co-pilot, for remuneration (once you have completed the type-specific training) on any large commercial aircraft certified for multi crew operations, up to the Boeing 747. To operate as pilot in command on multi crew aircraft you must complete the Airline Transport Pilot Licence (ATPL).
Requirements for the issue of a Commercial Pilot’s Licence (CPL):
1. You need to be at least 18 years old.
2. You need to be the holder of a class 1 medical certificate.
3. You need to hold a General Radio Telephony certificate.
4. You must have completed a minimum of 200 hours, of which 20 may have been completed on approved simulators. This actually means that if you pursue a CPL with Instrument Rating, you will need 180 hours of flight time.
5. Of these flight hours, 100 must be as pilot in command (PIC), which must include 5 hours as pilot in command at night. These hours must consist of a minimum of 20 hours cross country flight time, with at least 1 flight of more than 300NM’s with 2 full stop landings at airfields other than the base. You must also complete a night cross country flight with a minimum of 3 legs with each leg being more than 50 NM’s. You must have completed at least 10 take offs and 10 landings at night.
6. You must have successfully completed the SA-CAA CPL theory examinations.
7. You must complete a CPL General Flight Test in a complex-type aircraft (one that has adjustable flaps, retractable undercarriage and a constant-speed propeller), conducted by a Grade One Designated Flight Examiner (DFE).
8. Should an instrument rating be sought, the conditions listed under Instrument Rating must be met.
9. Application must be made to the SA-CAA for the Commercial Pilots Licence. The applicable fee must be paid.
Multi-engine
It is possible to do the final flight test in a Multi-Engine (ME) aircraft, if you are planning to obtain a multi engine rating. You need an effective hour building program, which is aimed at developing basic Crew Resource Management, and reinforces instrument procedures throughout. You will need supervision and monitoring. This allows for skills transfer between the airline environment and aspiring Commercial candidates.
Airline Transport Pilot
After you have spent considerable time in the Commercial aviation industry, you will need to upgrade your licence to the highest obtainable in the industry, the Airline Transport Pilots’ Licence. This allows you to act as pilot in command on any aircraft, once you have been appropriately rated. This is the rating required to become an Airline Captain.

Your aviation career starts with Durban Skyye Flight School - the stepping stone to your aviation career with your National Pilot Licence. Here is a simplified table showing the differences.

The Sling 2 has a wingspan of 9165mm and length from tailtip to propeller of 6675mm.
Engine options include the 912 Rotax ULS, 912 Rotax iS fuel-injected and 914 Rotax turbo. View the BRP Rotax website for the full powerplant specifications and differences.
Performance of the Sling 2 with the engine differences is set out in the following table, as well as the different range and endurance details of the Sling configured as a light sport aircraft (NPL licence) or as the Sling 2 version (PPL licence):
Sling 2 Interior
Sling 4 : Exterior Interior Technical Pricing
Luxury is a word that springs easily to mind where looking at the interior of the Sling aircraft. Gone is the mechano-set, sparse interior look and layout of the light aircraft of yesteryear. The Airplane Factory prides itself on the leather coverings offered for the cockpit and seats giving the aircraft a superior look and feel available previously only on multi-million rand aircraft. Colour-coding allows the interior colour scheme to match the exterior paintwork.
Leather seats, panelled sides and choice of dashboard finishes |
Typical layout of the seats, dual controls and dashboard |
The control panel can be configured to suit the requirements of the owner with either the traditional 6-pack instruments in front of the pilot, or the MGL Efis, and can also be configured with twin Efis instruments for both pilot and co-pilot/navigator placing the other instruments where preferred.
MGL Avionics iEfis |
EFIS
The MGL Efis also comes in variants that include the latest large touchscreen iEfis, or the Voyager series available from MGL. An iPad bracket can also be fitted as well as usb ports or the standard cigarette-holder power point.
Ventilation
Ventilation is excellent with two direct-feed interior vents and for the chilly winter-mornings cabin-heat can be applied.
Parachute
Safety can be enhanced with an airplane parachute with it's rocket-deployment system for rapid emergency firing and a gentle touch-down in otherwise hazardous terrain.
Luggage and weight limitations
The rear luggage compartment of the Sling can carry up to 35kgs in weight, and subject to the MAUW limitations of the aircraft which are set out in the technical specifications.
Sling 2 Exterior
Sling 4 : Exterior Interior Technical Pricing
The Sling 2 comprises a stressed skin semi-monocoque structure, precision punched from sheet aluminium by CNC punch. Punching is so precise that no drilling-out or de-burring is required. Parts go together much as with a child’s "Mechano" toy. The entire build is light, precise and simple, even for beginners to manage. That's if you're up for building your own from the kit supplied by The Airplane Factory! If you don't have time on your hands or are not technically minded, the Sling 2 also comes "ready-to-fly" and is fully assembled and delivered by The Airplane Factory.
The exterior paintwork is expertly finished with up-to-date spray-booth technology at the factory's Johannesburg base and custom designs and colours can be ordered.
Variations include filling the rivet holes or even flush-mounted rivets to either preserve the rugged metal look or favour the smoother and more streamlined surface of the secondary options.
